On the geometrical origin of the anisotropy in extrusion-based 3d printed structures

Structures that are 3D printed by an extrusion process have periodic geometrical heterogeneity whose influence on the final stiffness properties is not extensively discussed in existing literature. The objective of this article to quantify effect local lace geometry anisotropy extrusion-based 3d structures. A numerical homogenisation scheme implemented compute equivalent homogeneous Kirchhoff–Love plate stiffness. methodology applied parametric study oblong resulting from oriented-lace pressing. reveals bending two principal directions may vary order magnitude for common geometries, even assumption a perfect bound between layers. Numerical benchmarks against Finite Element Analysis show proposed approach accurate while significantly decreasing number degrees freedom model.
